❄️ Freezethawed: The Newsletter #057 - Shakespeare Quotes That Are Relevant Today
Hi everyone!
This week I read an article in the Kerala Journal of Ophthalmology on the relevance of scientific publications in today’s day and age by Dr. Santosh Honavar. It was beautifully written and intertwined with quotes by William Shakespeare.
Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest playwrights in history. His works have been studied and performed for centuries, and his influence can still be seen in literature, theatre, and even everyday conversation. While he lived more than 400 years ago, many of his quotes still resonate today. Here are some that I can remember:
🦹🏻 The Importance of Self-Expression
Hamlet: "To thine own self be true."
This quote emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself, one's values and beliefs. In a world where social media and peer pressure, this quote is more relevant than ever. It reminds us to prioritize our own happiness and well-being over the opinions of others.
As You Like It: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players."
This quote reminds us that we each have a role in life and should embrace our individuality and express ourselves fully. It serves as a reminder that we all have unique talents, skills, and perspectives to bring to the world.
🤺 The Power of Words
Othello: "Good name in man and woman, dear my lord, is the immediate jewel of their souls."
This quote highlights the importance of maintaining a good reputation and the impact that our words can have on others. In a world where social media and online communication have made it easier than ever to spread misinformation, this quote is a timely reminder to be mindful of our words and their impact.
Macbeth: "Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more."
This quote reminds us of the fleeting nature of life and the power of words to leave a lasting impact. It also serves as a reminder to choose our words carefully and use them wisely.
💛 The Universality of Love
Twelfth Night: "If music be the food of love, play on."
This quote reminds us of the power of love to inspire us and fill us with joy. It serves as a reminder that love is not just an emotion, but a force that can move us to action and inspire us to be the best version of ourselves.
🌬️ The Importance of Forgiveness
The Tempest: "The rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance."
This quote highlights the idea that it takes more strength to forgive than to seek revenge. In a world where conflicts can easily escalate, this quote is a reminder to choose the path of forgiveness and compassion. It serves as a reminder that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and maturity.
King Lear: "The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath."
This quote emphasizes the idea that mercy and forgiveness should be freely given, without any expectation of reward or praise. It serves as a reminder that forgiveness is not about the other person, but about freeing ourselves from the burden of anger and resentment.
👨🏻🎓 The Importance of Education
The Taming of the Shrew: "And do as adversaries do in law, strive mightily but eat and drink as friends."
This quote highlights the idea that it's possible to disagree with someone and still treat them with respect and kindness. It also emphasizes the importance of learning and understanding the viewpoints of others.
The Merchant of Venice: "The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems and spoils."
This quote reminds us of the importance of art and culture in our lives. It serves as a reminder that education is not just about memorizing facts and figures, but also about developing a sense of empathy and understanding for the world around us.
👑 The Importance of Leadership
Julius Caesar: "Men at some time are masters of their fates. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings."
This quote highlights the idea that individuals have the power to shape their own destinies and that leaders should encourage and empower their followers to do so. It serves as a reminder that good leaders are those who inspire and motivate their followers to achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
Julius Caesar: "Cowards die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once."
This quote emphasizes the importance of courage and bravery in leadership. It reminds us that leaders must be willing to take risks and face challenges in order to achieve their goals. This last one is a personal favourite.
🤔 Conclusion
William Shakespeare's works are a testament to the power of language, serving as a guide for us in the challenges of the modern world. It is indeed baffling to me as to how relevant they are even today.
