This week I read an article in the Kerala Journal of Ophthalmology on the relevance of scientific publications in today’s day and age by Dr. Santosh Honavar. It was beautifully written and intertwined with quotes by William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest playwrights in history. His works have been studied and performed for centuries, and his influence can still be seen in literature, theatre, and even everyday conversation. While he lived more than 400 years ago, many of his quotes still resonate today. Here are some that I can remember:

Macbeth: "Out, out, brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more."

This quote reminds us of the power of love to inspire us and fill us with joy. It serves as a reminder that love is not just an emotion, but a force that can move us to action and inspire us to be the best version of ourselves.

The Tempest: "The rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance."

This quote highlights the idea that it takes more strength to forgive than to seek revenge. In a world where conflicts can easily escalate, this quote is a reminder to choose the path of forgiveness and compassion. It serves as a reminder that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and maturity.

King Lear: "The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath."

This quote emphasizes the importance of courage and bravery in leadership. It reminds us that leaders must be willing to take risks and face challenges in order to achieve their goals. This last one is a personal favourite.

William Shakespeare's works are a testament to the power of language, serving as a guide for us in the challenges of the modern world. It is indeed baffling to me as to how relevant they are even today.
